Room for one more (2022 - revised)
I’ve included this illustration amongst my current works as it’s a piece I’ve touched up time and time again as my abilities have improved, and finally in 2025 I can confidently say I’m happy with it (massive hurrah).
This piece was actually originally based as a commission, but it fell through towards the end of the final sketch stage and I didn’t have the heart to throw it away. The brush, colour and certain design choices that were established in 2022 are definitely outdated, but there are also some aspects that were ahead of their time whether intentional or by accident. I was very proud of the form of the knight, couch and use of perspective.
The me of the present finds my composition choices tasteful if not a bit silly but nothing that isn’t endearing. Older me had to fix the floors perspective as I had it all wrong, I took it as an opportunity to render the tiles properly instead of just black and white checkers. The back ground is still a blank colour and a tedious choice at that, however, I concluded whilst texture is creeping its way into my art style, I needed to stay true to my original self if not for the sake reducing of clutter and busyness. The most recent addition alongside some new characters is the border, like much of my work, the overall composition felt unfinished, but as someone in their “put borders on everything” era, I did just that to bring this artwork the closure it deserves.
What is left is a piece with more history than it has sense, and one that I hold dear and find a deep sense of comfort within. Whilst I have no intention of making a habit of reworking pieces for 4 years, I like to think that this illustration marks the end of an old era of art to make way for an unburdened new chapter in my artistic journey.
